According to a Bloomberg report, GitHub Copilot will allow developers to write natural language code by using AI to auto-populate the code. In other words, AI-assisted automatic code could help by doing repetitive or time-consuming coding tasks. Of course, this is not the first time we are seeing GitHub Copilot. In fact, the project reached general availability in July. Microsoft first introduced GitHub Copilot in 2021 and has been previewing the service since. It costs $10 per month or $100 per year (per user). GitHub Copilot runs on a new AI platform developed by OpenAI known as Codex. Copilot is designed to help programmers across a wide range of scenarios and frameworks: “GitHub Copilot understands significantly more context than most code assistants. So, whether it’s in a docstring, comment, function name, or the code itself, GitHub Copilot uses the context you’ve provided and synthesizes code to match. Together with OpenAI, we’re designing GitHub Copilot to get smarter at producing safe and effective code as developers use it.”
Future
So, at the moment Copilot gives access to code archives users can access to plug gaps or fill-in areas of their code. However, as the AI improves, Microsoft and OpenAI want the tool to auto-generate code when the user starts searching with a few lines of text. Not just that, the AI will also swap and auto-generate code within a system. Microsoft says “conversations in games that often feel stilted or repetitive—from, say, villagers, soldiers and other background characters—could suddenly become engaging and responsive.” It is worth remembering GitHub Copilot has not been met with much enthusiasm from all users. In June 2021, Microsoft introduced GitHub Copilot. However, the service was quickly met with backlash from the open-source community. One of the main criticisms regarding Copilot is it goes against the ethics of open source because it is a paid service. The AI training is problematic for some people because they argue Copilot is using snippets of code to train and then charging users. In other words, the service uses code written by others and gives it other users.
